Natural Dyes for Eggs or Fabric

82c2c-z136871706(While this explains how to dye eggs, the same dyes can also be used for play silks)

Red-cabbage dye: 5 cups chopped cabbage (blue)
Turmeric dye: 4 tablespoons turmeric (yellow)
Onion-skin dye: 5 cups onion skins
Beet dye: 5 cups chopped beets (red)
Coffee dye: 1 quart strong black coffee
Paprika Dye: 4 Tablespoons

Really you can experiment with any plant materials but sometimes the results are not what you would expect.

White Vinegar

1. Select a dyeing agent, and place it in a blender with a quart of water and 2 Tablespoons White Vinegar. Blend thoroughly. If you need more water then you should make sure to add more vinegar also.

Now this can be a bit of science experiment because you can dye 8cdd3-z83921857the eggs one of two ways.

2. You can put the eggs in this solution in large dutch oven and boil them lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes. This will create a dark color.

3. You can also allow the dye to cool and soak eggs that you have already boiled in the cooled, strained solution. The color will not be as dark.

4. You can also play around with putting the eggs first in one color and then in another to try to create other colors.

Happy St. Paddy’s Day!

I am feeling pretty productive today. I already have the soda bread made for Girl Scouts and dinner and it is only 8 a.m. We are going to our mall playdate this morning and then the breastfeeding support group so I needed to make the stuff this morning or I knew it wouldn’t get done.

Corned beef and cabbage for dinner even though I keep trying to tell Steve that it isn’t really very Irish at all, but he spent his high school years in Chicago with the ChIrish, so concessions must be made. I will make a colcannon to go with it so I guess that is a pretty decent attempt.

Here is my soda bread recipe:

Cut butter the size of an egg into three cups of flour, a half cup of sugar and 2 tsp baking soda. Mix in a handful of raisins. Beat together one egg and a cup and a half of buttermilk. Stir this into the dry stuff. Bake at 350 in a greased round cake pan until it is brown. (about 35-45 minutes).
